Let's Pray for the City of Wilmington

I call on all mothers especially those living in the city of Wilmington to find some time today to say a prayer for the city of Wilmington.

Violence has escalated to an all time high where our children are being senselessly killed in the streets. If this is not disturbing I don't know what else is. I am confident that prayer makes a difference, it is that secret weapon that we can use at any time and anywhere.

Know that God is concerned with what concerns us. He will step in and make the difference. This situation can be turned around where we can experience peace in our streets, where our children can go out and we are not worried if they will return safely.

As much as possible be aware of where your children are going, who they are hanging out with and what there activities are. Never hesitate to say NO if you do not approve. They may get upset, but you are the one who was given the responsibility to raise them and not the other way around.
The scriptures (Joshua 23:10) states that when God is fighting for you, "One man can chase a thousand, and two shall put ten thousand to flight (Deuteronomy 32:29-31).

Can you imagine what will happen if everyone of you who read this stop to pray?

Finding the Hidden Treasures within

As I constantly remind you- our children are gifts on loan from God. Did you know that within each of these gifts are hidden treasures?  The term treasure is used for something that is precious, a prize, something to be cherished, a star. Deep within our children are some precious and cherished qualities and treasures of invention, songwriting, art, entrepreneurship, politics, teaching and athletics to name a few.

I know this because God made the plans for each of our children’s lives before He ever created them (Jeremiah 29:11).  As mothers our job is to help unearth these treasures for the world to see and for God to be glorified.  We can start by affirming who our children are-fearfully and wonderfully made lacking nothing, royalty and set apart. This affirmation gives them an advantage and confidence to help them move to the next stage of never settling for second best, or almost made it, or not quite there.

Keep in mind that in finding hidden treasures you will have to dig deep. Digging can be hard work and tiring, but after you have found that treasure you know it was well worth it. Do not give up now. Continue to correct, teach, pray, love, forgive: when you see that diamond it will be well worth it.

God’s promises for our children

Did you realize that there are approximately 65 promises in the bible concerning the children of the righteous?  Keep in mind that these promises also apply to you as well.

One of the promises is that of divine PROVISION or taking care of our needs. As any responsible parent we strive to make sure that we are able to give our children what we think they need and if we are unable to we worry and get anxious.
Here are two verses of scripture that remind us of this truth.

Isaiah 40: 11- He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry [them] in his bosom, [and] shall gently lead those that are with young.
The role of a shepherd is a very important one. In the bible God/Jesus is often referred to as a Shepherd such as the Good shepherd, the Great shepherd and the Chief shepherd. One of the first things that a shepherd does is to feed his sheep. They do so by leading them to green pastures and as soon as that pasture becomes bare, then the shepherd moves on leading them to new pastures.  Jesus as our Shepherd makes sure that we are fed- physically and spiritually.  He does this not only for your children, but also for you.  We should try not to worry when a door of income disappears He will open up an alternative source.

Sheep are not able to take care of themselves- they will not do a good job.  As His sheep we also need to remember that we are also unable to take care of ourselves. We must depend on our Shepherd.  The Shepherd not only takes care of the sheep but He also takes care of the lambs.  Just as the shepherd carries the lambs in his bosom a place of protection, comfort and intimacy, Jesus, our Shepherd carries those of us who are weak and young and helpless.  Jesus as a Good shepherd knows how to treat each one of us.  He carries a rod and staff, but knows when to use each. He knows when to be Gentle and when to nudge or pull.
The second verse that I will share comes from Psalms 37:25 KJV—“I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.”

These are words of David confirming this promise of PROVISION. Isn’t this awesome?

Taming the tongue-difficult but not impossible

I grew up hearing and saying this phrase "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."  After I got a bit wiser I realize that this is really not the truth.  I have had people say some things to me that were so hurtful that I wished they had broken one of arm or leg. You see, it is easier to get a cast applied to the broken limb than it is to heal a broken heart or spirit.

Proverbs 18: 21 tell us that: Death and life [are] in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.  In the book of James – chapter 3 we find some incredible information concerning the tongue and how difficult it is to tame it.

James talks about it being easier to break a wild horse by using a “bit” or steering a big ship with a small rudder, than it is to manage the tongue (v3-4).  The fact that the tongue can be so damaging, should caution us to be very careful how we use it.  This is more so true to mothers who can sometimes take out our frustration and anger on our children by saying things that are hurtful.

For this year let us resolve to use our tongues wisely, let us refrain from gossiping, lying and tearing people down. Instead let use build up, correct lovingly, exhort and affirm.

I was on the internet and came across a sermon by Rick Smith about taming the tongue and here is something that he said that I think we will all benefit from. Before you speak, think. Here is the acrostic he used for think.

T - is it true?
H - is it helpful?
I - is it inspiring?
N - is it necessary?
K - is it kind?.
If what you are about to say does not pass this simple test, then don't say it.

Spiritual Fasting

Many of us welcome the month of January to shed the many pounds that we accumulated over thanksgiving and Christmas. Some of us join the local gym and work out, and many will participate in various types of "Fasts" depending on how quickly they want to shed those pounds.

Many Christians individually or collectively with their churches also participate in a Spiritual fast at ...the start of the New Year. For many of us it is the 21-day Daniel Fast. There are approximately 99 verses in the bible that refer to "Fasting" and hence I do believe that fasting is very important. Although God commanded fasting of the Israelites in the Old Testament, we do not see Him commanding fasting in the New Testament nor do we see him forbidding it.

Many early Christians did practice fasting and prayer as a part of their spiritual lives and truly belief that we should also take some time out to participate in a time of fasting also. Having said let me caution you not to participate in a Fast just to say you did a fast, but make sure that you Fast with the purpose of gaining spiritual strength, a deeper understanding of God and a closer relationship with Him. Sometimes we need clarity from God concerning what our next steps should be. Sometimes when we need a breakthrough concerning situations in our lives (our health, issues with our children, our marriages or our career) it is necessary to spend some time seeking God’s face.

When we fast it is not about the length of time, but rather it is about the effectiveness of your Fasting. Although fasting is generally abstaining from food, you can also abstain from other things that will require some sacrifice such as watching your favorite television show. If you have never fasted before and want to try it, you should start with a partial fast- such as abstaining for a few hours at a time and not for an entire day. As you get more comfortable then you can adjust the length of time. If you have special dietary needs, make sure that you seek the advice of your health care provider and avoid complicating your health problems.
